How to Become an X ray Tech – A 3-Step Guide to X-ray School in California
You should know what Diagnostic Healthcare employers are looking for if you want to become an X-ray Tech in California. While you never want to base your decisions on what may be right for others, there are some fundamentals you should know before enrolling into any X-ray Technician program. Here’s a step-by-step guide about what to look for if you’re thinking of enrolling in X-ray school.
Remember that different X-ray schools in Orange County and California will offer different benefits to students. Moreover, you should do your research when choosing the best X-ray school for your needs. Because each student’s needs will differ, it’s vital for you to take notes on what is important to your situation.
Step 1: Find an Accredited Program at a Reputable X-ray School
Accreditation isn’t a catch-all, but it is a good additional safety measure when choosing the right X-ray school. Before meeting with Admissions reps and/or signing on the dotted line, find out if they’re accredited. Not only can you save a lot of time, but you can also weed-out radiology schools that don’t measure-up in terms of quality.
Furthermore, an accredited X-ray school will have a non-biased third party double-checking and vetting many aspects of the education you receive. For instance, we are accredited by the ACCSC, who is recognized by the US Dept of Education as the institutional accrediting body for over 650 schools and over 150,000 students. Click here for a statement of what they look for and their accreditation standards.
An accredited X-ray school will undergo regular audits. The accrediting body will scrutinize everything from the curriculum to campus, instructors, textbooks, equipment to clinical internship. Finally, an accredited X-ray school will usually share the mission & core values of the accrediting body. The ACCSC believes in a students first experience. We want to embody this through all the Healthcare programs offered at Modern Technology School.
Step 2: Find an X-ray School with a Culture that Fits Your Personality & Lifestyle
Some schools believe in herding students like cattle and creating a one-size fits all X-ray Tech program. Because we’ve been here since 1981, we know that nothing can be further from the truth. We’ve kept class sizes small and as such, students come to us when they want focused hands-on X-ray Tech training.
If you get a bad vibe from a school or the Admissions rep you’re working with, don’t be afraid to walk. There’s no reason students should feel pressured to enroll if the situation or X-ray school doesn’t meet their needs. For example, imagine only being able to attend X-ray Tech night classes due to your schedule, commitments and lifestyle. Now imagine an Admissions rep trying to persuade you to enroll in a daytime class, even if it will disrupt or clash with your needs.
This is a perfect example of finding an X-ray school that fits your personality. While finding an X-ray Technician program close to home is great, sometimes you do have to travel. That said, we’re in a great era for Healthcare Education in Orange County and SoCal. If you need help finding the right X-ray class for you, feel free to give us a call. Our friendly Admissions Advisor is savvy enough to help and will take your situation into consideration.
Step 3: Look for an X-ray School that Offers a Value-Packed All-Inclusive Program for X-ray Technicians
Did you know that California Diagnostic Healthcare employers are looking for a cross-trained X-ray Technician? They want a hybrid of both X-ray Tech and Medical Assistant. Because of this, you’re going to want to find a combine X-ray Tech / Medical Assisting program. Moreover, one that doesn’t make you take each program separately, paying two different tuitions.
Instead, find an X-ray school that will offer Medical Assistant cross-training to all of their X-ray Technician students. X-ray Tech programs like the one here at MTS offer students a 12-month curriculum. This includes all your X-ray training + time spent in training as a Medical Assistant, as well as your Clinical Internship.
The keyword here is all-inclusive, and you should ask the X-ray school if they offer an all-inclusive X-ray Tech class.
